Windy Hill- a Cape Cod House Renovation in Chatham MA
This house on a hill overlooking Stage Harbor had an unlikely origin as a pre-cut kit made in Ohio and shipped to Chatham, where it was assembled in the late 1930s. The interior walls and ceiling were finished with a relatively new material called plywood. Combined with very small windows, this made for a very dark interior. We brightened the house considerably by adding large windows to capture the water views, removing a wall between the kitchen and dining area, and by covering the walls and ceilings with drywall. Painted white, the living space is now filled with light, and the harbor is now a presence in the room.
The exterior transformation was completed by replacing the undersized windows at the three doghouse dormers with new windows that fill the front walls and provide a clear view of Stage Harbor from the bedrooms upstairs.
